“One Woman’s Victory Opens Doors for Many”: Kanika Dhillon Talks Female Solidarity and Gandhari

Mumbai: The importance of women supporting women in the film industry took centre stage at a special panel discussion titled “Women Building Cinema Together”, organised by Katha Pictures in association with WIF India. The event brought together actress Taapsee Pannu, writer-producer Kanika Dhillon and Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga Kapoor to discuss women’s leadership, creative collaboration and the need for stronger professional networks for women in Indian cinema.

During the discussion, Kanika Dhillon spoke passionately about the importance of celebrating fellow women creators and standing by them in an industry where opportunities can often be limited.

“When people ask me where such complex, strong and rare women come from, I say they are all around me,” Dhillon said. She stressed that women should not be reduced to one-dimensional characters or portrayed as helpless figures, adding that women professionals are capable and resilient.

Dhillon also highlighted how the success of one woman can create opportunities for others. “The impact of one of us winning is much bigger than you can imagine,” she said, pointing to the achievements of Guneet Monga Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu as examples of how women can create pathways for one another.

She further urged women to speak up when another woman is being undermined. According to Dhillon, solidarity is essential because women continue to operate within a system where opportunities are not always abundant.

The event was attended by several actors and creative professionals, including Sanjana Sanghi, Pragya Jaiswal, Harleen Sethi, director Ashima and Priyanka Ghosh, among others. An interactive networking session followed the panel.
